Start on Newcastle / North side of Gateshead Millennium Bridge (green star in map below). Run East (river on your right-hand side) and follow the signs for National Cycle Route No 72 Hadrian’s Way for approx. 10km.
To your left you’ll notice the Blacksmith’s Needle sculpture. Opened in 1997 and made by the British Artist Blacksmith’s Association, it was a collaborative effort of pieces forged in different parts of the country.
You will come to Armstrong Road, then Auburn Close. At the end of Auburn Close turn right onto Howdon Lane, then first left onto Norman Terrace then at the end turn right onto Cumberland St. Follow cycle route 14 sign to the left onto Bewicke St. Follow cycle signs to cross to other side of road when safe and follow path behind fence alongside road. At the end of the path turn right to head to the Pedestrian & Cycle tunnel. Follow this to the other side of the river.
As you exit the tunnel on the other side of the river (South, Gateshead) , head up Tyne St to the roundabout with the B1297 and turn right along Chaytor St, following the signs for National Cycle Route No 14 (Coast to Coast C2C) all the way back to Millennium Gateshead Bridge in the heart of Newcastle Quayside and where this route began. The route takes you along the pavements of minor roads as well as pedestrianised routes alongside the river.
